Dear Oldenburg, You seem like a decent person. Is there any way you can advocate for your candidate without calling someone else a "bumbling idiot?" Please be specific. What policy differences exist between the candidates? And, why do you have the position that you do?
For me, the more I learn about Chris Cannon, the more I like him. I admit that he is an acquired taste, but I love the guy. He is not an idiot, not even close. He's smart, and in all the debates I have seen, he has dominated the nice young man running against him.
For example, I agree with Congressman Cannon’s position on the minimum wage.
In my opinion, forcing businesses to pay a minimum wage makes it so that many small businesses offer fewer jobs, if any, simply because they can’t afford to pay that much. It also denies positions to folks who would have appreciated having those jobs. I don’t think the government has a right to do that.
Plus, I am not a Socialist. I do not support Socialist approaches to solving societal problems. The history of the USA verses the history of the USSR proves which system helps the poor better. I do not want the government forcing any kind of an artificial minimum wage onto society. Besides being inflationary, and damaging to the economy, it simply is wrong Constitutionally. I would rather have freedom, and free market forces making such determinations, not big brother.
I think there are lots of people I disagree with who aren't idiots...but Chris Cannon says stupid things over and over again. Like blaming teen pages for getting sexually harassed by Mark Foley. He is a walking gaffe.
For example, I think George W. Bush is smart, as is Cheney, Pearle, Wolfowitz, Scooter Libby, etc. They might be self-delusional, but they are pretty smart. There are many GOPers who I strongly dislike and disagree with, but I have to admit they are pretty clever...albeit intellectually dishonest or hypocritical (Steele, Ehrlich, Mehlman, DeLay, etc.)
Others are pretty dumb: Frist, who got out proceedured by Reed over and over again, James Evans, who thought a 4 min. clip of 4 hrs of video taken out of context would help his Sheriff candidate.
I have lots of respect for many very conservative people and politicians. But the Cannon's are not among them.
Dear Oldenburg, Now that the election is over, we can afford to be a little more generous and even-handed in our analysis.
Please be honest with me, do you really believe that Chris Cannon was "blaming the victims" during that interview?
I do not. I think Ethan (a good man to be sure) was a little too eager to characterize it as being that, and the label ended sticking. Am I wrong?
I find it interesting that you consider our President, George W. Bush, to be smart, but Chris Cannon to be an idiot. Kudos to you for being open minded toward the President. That took me by surprise, but I don't understand how Congressman Cannon, who graduated from Law School and passed the bar exam, could be considered to be an idiot. Please explain.
Dear Anonymous, It's too bad that people have to be so guarded and filtered. We complain about politicians who are less than forthright, and yet if one ever ventures to speak frankly from the heart, we immediately punish him or her for not being sufficiently PC. In short, we have only ourselves and the ratings hungry news media to blame for it. We train them, like Pavlov's dogs, to act the way they do.
after awhile, saying dumb things aren't just mistakes, they are intentional or unawareness at how their comments would likely be interpreted.
Some things that Bush says sounds dumb, but it really is whistled dog politics...coded messages for key constituences. By contrast, Chris Cannon cannot speak in code.

How the voters of Utah's 3rd district can stand having such a bumbling idiot for a Congressman is beyond me.

Cong. Cannon actually IS a very smart guy. Unfortunately for him and his press peeps, he just has no filter.
