Instead of Backtalk, check out this serious smacktalk buried in a local candidate's website:

http://www.carrieforclerk.com/links/

To see the really bizarre, go to Sherrie News and read the ones under sexual harasment. It doesn't look like some of this stuff could have been legally released.

I don't know who this Nick guy is but he definintely has some office behavior issues.

Get out there while you can. Once they realize what they've posted, it will probably come down.

I am not the "anonymous" who posted the preceding link to the Carrie Dickson campaign website, nor am I responding to it as part of a contrived and coordinated stunt. However, I must disclose that I am in complete sympathy with its apparent purposes.

I have read several of the newspaper articles listed under the "News about Sherrie Swensen" link before. One of them, however, contains a quote that hits me everytime I read it. I think it is very telling:

"It's not just the activities of Nick Floros that make me mad," said Democratic County Councilman Jim Bradley. "What really makes me angry is that he got away with it for years. It may be that the good ol' boy network protected him." ("Cronyism is hinted in sealed sex probe - Harassment allegation: Some say a former employee is being protected by his colleagues." Christopher Smart, Salt Lake Tribune, December 18, 2004)

Firstly, I am impressed with the integrity of Democrat Jim Bradley in addressing the corruption of fellow Democrat Nick Floros and the "good ol' boy network" that protected him.

I think most of us political junkies have a pretty good idea of who he is talking about when he refers to a certain "good ol' boy network." (Democrat insiders, David Yocum, Randy Horiuchi, Joe Hatch, and Sherrie Swensen come to mind.) The fact that Bradley would call them out is impressive. Some things are more important than party affiliation and he seems to get it. God bless him.

Secondly, I am frustrated with the lack of quality journalistic coverage of county government issues and races. Because of this defficiency, the average voter in our community has no idea of who they're voting for when they walk into the booth on election day.

Yes, the press was there to cover David Yocum's prosecuting of Nancy Workman when she used county funds to subsidize the services of an employee for her daughter at the Boys and Girls Club. (She, of course, was later exonerated of any criminal wrong doing.) But, where were they when David Yocum allegedly used his office to provide official favors for his son?

There have been allegations that David Yocum made his son's recent DUI arrest quietly go away. This is the same son, Jason Yocum, who took Nick Floros' place as Sherrie Swensen's chief deputy. If this "good ol boy network" that Jim Bradley refers to really does exist, then why doesn't Salt Lake's media cover it?

If they did, maybe the voters could provide a little housecleaning this year. Goodness know that it is far overdue.

How interesting...I didn't know that Jason Yocum's attorney was Greg Skordas -- the long time leutenet of David Yocum. That information makes this old Paul Rolly blog entry even more fun to read:

-------------------------

The Boomerang Effect
Here's a potential irony shaping up for next year's election season.

Democratic Salt Lake County District Attorney Dave Yocom filed felony charges against then Republican County Mayor Nancy Workman for alleged misuse of public funds.

Workman was defended by Greg Skordas, a Yocom protege who at the time was the Democratic candidate for attorney general. Workman was acquitted by a jury and Yocom and Skordas' longtime friendship was severely damaged.

Yocom is not running for re-election and Skordas likely will seek the Democratic nomination for D.A. next year. Salt Lake City prosecutor Sim Gill also may seek the Democratic nomination and Yocom already has said publicly he is supporting Gill.

Lohra Miller, who ran against Yocom four years ago, has said she again will seek the Republican nomination for D.A. She has been a harsh critic of Yocom. Meanwhile, Kent Morgan, a trusted deputy in Yocom's office also has said he will run for the office as a Republican.

So the race is shaping up as a pro-Yocom vs. anti-Yocom fight in both the Democratic and Republican parties for the D.A. seat. Here's the intrigue. Workman is sitting on about $200,000 she raised for her re-election bid before the charges filed by Yocom forced her out of the race. Yocom has indicated that if she uses that money for personal reasons he will file charges against her for violating county election laws. He says she only can use the money for political purposes.

And those political purposes, some are speculating, could be the support of whoever Yocom does not want to succeed him as D.A., including the one-time protege who has not been forgiven for his successful defense of Yocom's mortal enemy.

Cheers,
Paul Rolly

Does anyone know what Mayor Workman ever did with that $200,000 war chest?

The last polling data I saw showed that the Republican Lohra Miller was running neck and neck with the Democrat Sim Gill. If there was ever a time for the former mayor to step-in to free us from Yocum's network (either for revenge or principle) now might be the time.

I'm sure that a nice donation to both the Lohra Miller and Carrie Dickson campaigns would do a lot of good. And, a little advice to the Lohra Miller campaign wouldn't hurt either.

I think that their graphic designers made a huge mistake in just printing LOHRA on their campaign signs and billboards. I suspect than more than one person out there thinks that LOHRA is someone's last name.

If Nancy Workman does come through with a last minute donation, my advice to the Lohra Miller campaign would be to replace all those signs that Sim Gill's people keep steeling with new signs that show her full name!

The name on the ballot is going to be Lohra Miller...not LOHRA.

Think about that and do the wise thing. (Just a note from a friend who wants you to win for the good of us all.)

Nancy is still sitting on all that cash. I don't know of any campaigns that have been able to squeeze a dollar out of her. And that makes me real nervous about the next couple of election cycles. One can only hope and pray that she will stay out of politics for good.

As for the signage. I agree. It doesn't really make much sense to just promote your first name.

Is she sitting on the money because she has plans to run for office in the future, or is it because she hasn't forgiven the county Republicans for booting her in favor of Ellis Ivory?

Ironically, if your suspicions are correct, I think the smartest thing she could do politically would be to spread some of that money around within the party.

Neither she nor the party has really forgiven the other. Thus, helping the party to win some key races (and the community to clean out some corrupt trash) would go a long way in repairing bridges--not to mention her reputation.

But, that's not a very likely scenario. If we weren't constantly trying to destroy one another, we wouldn't be Salt Lake County Republicans.
