Competition

Governor Huntsman's problem isn't that he'll hold up the 4th seat. What the Governor has done in creating four safe districts is ended any competition outside of the convention. We can create at least two competitive districts. The problem is, competition is bad when all you want to do is hold on to power. This is simply a way for Utah's elite to put distance between themselves and the voters. I thought the Governor was bigger than this.

Republicans in Utah are going to ram through whatever it takes to get the extra seat, and that means preserving the balance of power in Congress for now. The new seat has to be safely Republican in order to balance out the DC seat, and Matheson's district has to be kept safe for the Democrats in order to keep Republicans from gaining two seats out of this deal.

Wait until 2012. By then, the Legislature will safely gerrymander four majority-Republican districts and everything will be business as usual in Utah again.
