Reporting Tragedy, High Emotions, And 4- Letter Words

The coverage of the tragic Destiny Norton story has provided insight into local reporting styles. This observation was passed along to me earlier today. SL Tribune: "They told us they searched these buildings four f------ times," Norton family spokeswoman Jeannie Hill said of police. “They did not do their jobs." DesNews: family friend Jeannie Hill said. "They told us they'd searched these buildings four (expletive) times. They did not do their job." KSL: Jeannie Norton, a friend of the family for 10 years, said police had said they searched the buildings four times. "They did not do their jobs," she said.

I also noted that the Trib is mysteriously calling the "uncle" a "self-proclaimed uncle." Everyone else is just leaving it be and calling him an "uncle."

The little girl's death is terrible news and quite a horrible thing to happen.

I agree this has been a hard thing to hear. I can see how the families emotions are so full that the feelings of how could we have stopped this are overwhelming. I hope that they realize not only the communities contribution but the police have been working to help them. I was sad to hear them upset at the very people that have found her. They didn't hurt the little girl they aren't the bad guys...so many children are never found dead or alive and those parents grieve. I am grateful they have at least brought the opportunity of closure to a horrific situation (emotions may not feel closure -but the stress of where is my baby? -is answered and I believe that she is with God he is holding and comforting her! My prayers are with Destiny's family.

It seems the Norton's are claiming that because her "family" is a sort of a hippie commune, the police focused on "family" members and not the creep nextdoor that choaked her the same day she went missing and left her body to rot in the basement while pretending to look for her.
