A Second Downtown

I just returned from Sandy City's stadium presentation to the County Council. It wasn't a presentation on a stadium. It was a plea for the County to give Sandy the seed money to build a 136 acre downtown at the south end of the valley. Worst Idea Ever

Given the state of Salt Lake City's Downtown, why would Sandy want one, too?

I know in Utah you have to turn back the clock 20 years, but haven't we all learned that subsidizing new development in the suburbs is NOT a good idea? Moreover, the shelf-life of a stadium-centered commercial development is only 30 years (boy the area around the Great Western Forum in Inglewood is just booming!) and so basically Sandy is asking the County to fund a non-sustainable development scenario for which they will reap the sales/property tax benefits but then send the poor people back home to the west side of the valley. Oh yeah, and while they're at it, they're going to put a school district wall around themselves and use the new county-subsidized property-tax receipts to exclusively fund Sandy pupils.

Sandy sucks. I say the County fund a physical relocation of the Sandy City from the mouth of little cottonwood canyon so I don't have to drive through it anymore.

Unless they can pull something else out of their a... uhh sleeve, I don't think Sandy will be getting any SL Co. tax money for the Réal Sandy soccer stadium.

Get Réal, Sandy!!

Did you see Councilman Joe Hatch?? The guy looked like somebody woke him up to go to the meeting. And then woke him up and told him it was over.

Did you have any Idea that Mayor Dolan was going to purpose this huge of a development? I can’t imagine how they could pull this off without a referendum on the ballot.
