Salt Lake City Mayor

Many high profile names have been lining up to take a shot at a confused and wandering Mayor Rocky Anderson and become Salt Lake City's next mayor. Among those interested have been House Majority Leader Ralph Becker, and County Council members Randy Horiuchi and Joe Hatch. They are considering stepping aside in favor of Councilwoman Jenny Wilson. Gut reaction: She has the right name, so that works in her favor, but her political legacy on the County Council is still unclear. She's still in her first term. For me the thing that really comes to mind is that she kept wanting to retrofit Rice Eccles to permanently house BOTH RSL and U of U football. That was the worst of all the solutions that were presented.

Jenny Wilson will probably be a spoiler in the race. She's accomplished nothing so far, and really has no record to run on.

The problem is the race is non-partisan, so you'll see about 9 or 10 candidates in the primary.

SLC Mayor is probably the only seat in the state a Republican can't win.

I like Jenny, but she doesn't have the street cred to run on yet.

And here stadium proposal sucked.

On the contrary, I think the R/E stadium proposal is best--for the time being. Most likely Real SL will be around for 2 more seasons at best. There is no reason to build a new stadium anywhere for a business with such a spectacularly poor plan. Let Real Salt Lake prove itself before anything is built, I say. If they last and draw a crowd then they can build their stadium. Then perhaps they will put up their own money and not have to glom on to the fisc.

I agree with you on that. I think they should stay a couple of more years there. What was a bad idea was retrofitting RES to make it an acceptable permanent home for both teams.

That I agree with.

I could do a run-down of all the professional teams that have graced SL in the past 10 years and died due to lack of interest on the part of the populace, but then it would just get depressing.

If Jenny is as inept and corrupt as her father it will be the status quote in SLC.

Wilson "has the right name." What wonders, precisely, did her father work for the fair city of Salt Lake? Not too many that I can recall.

And what's in the ice cream that makes this state such a big fan of political dyansties?

1) Senator Bob Bennett, son of Senator Wallace Bennett (and his son's running for state senate in my district).

2) Rep. Jim Matheson, son of...

3) Gubernatorial candidate Scott Matheson, son of...

4) Gov. Mike Leavitt, son of...

5) Chris Cannon, grandson of...

That's actually a pretty long list for a state this small. 3 out of 5 congressmen are "sons of." I realize it happens elswhere, too (Al Gore, W, etc.), but to nearly this extent?

Oh, yes. I forgot "Jon Huntsman, Jr, son of..."

I am so thrilled to see that Ralph Becker is running! So far, I would say he is the one to beat. He has served us in District 24 very well, we are so proud.
