Casual Dress

Oh, I guess if you make it a big joke, it's okay to dress down at the legislature. One of the representatives alerted the Congressman to the fact that many in the legislature were sporting sweaters and no ties (in honor of his visit)? One was even wearing no socks. So if you're a lovable joker, then you get away with it. If you're the press, you're part of a conspiracy to smear the reputation of the legislature.

When Bishop was Speaker of the House in Utah, he staunchly refused to wear a tie or suitcoat, preferring an open collar shirt and a sweater. He often wore no socks on the floor of the House. This was common knowledge. The media regularly noted it and chuckled about it. It does seem odd that the press are criticized for doing the same thing as the former speaker.

I haven't been there at all this session, but when I heard the initial flap I got an image of camera-men in beer-stained wife-beaters with their back and shoulder hair sticking out everywhere. Bishop's Wally Cleaver approach would still be significantly classier.
