The Grinch Who Stole Pioneer Day

Hey, Chad Keller of Salt Lake City: Go to hell. From Chad Keller's letter to the Readers' Forum "Simply put, the Days of '47 Pioneer Day celebration is overrated, highly inconvenient, smells of state endorsement of religion, brings out the unruly pompous LDS sect and upstages the nation's birthday."

What an idiot! By his logic, let's abolish Columbus Day, Martin Luther King Day, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, etc. If your parents are dead, no need for Mother's or Father's Day either. Ironic he uses the word "pompous"
And inconvenient! Heaven (endorsement) forbid that he can't use Main street for three hours a year!
"Upstages the nation's birthday?" It's 20 days later! Bloody 'ell!
Why now, too? Either he needs a new calendar or the DNews Reader's Forum must be low on controversy these days.

Whether or not Pioneer Day is a tacit endorsement of religion, I've never cared. I mean, how can you be against another holiday in the Summer?

Interesting sidenote: typically the most liquor busts coming in from Wyoming occur over the 24th weekend (when it falls on or near one). So, it would seem that most everyone in Utah has found a way to embrace Pioneer Day:)

There's an unruly pompus LDS sect? I must not hang out with the right LDS people as they are all relatively boring and bland.

I suppose in Chad's world Columbus Day celebrations must also smell of state endorsement of religion and bring out the unruly, greasy, Catholic sect.

When living outside of Utah I generally insist on having the 24th off so I can go to a local bar and baffle people by celebrating my pioneer heritage with plenty of beer.

Hey! Found your blog when looking for stuff on Valentine's Day Poems. Not quite what I was looking for, but a good read anyhow, so I thought I'd post a comment. Me and My Valentine's Day Poems Site.
