You Know, We Have Sculptors In Utah

The newly renovated Utah State Capitol Building will have space for four brand spanking new sculptures at a cost of nearly $400,000. The will not be sculpted in Utah. They will not be sculpted by a Utah artist. The project went to a "sculpture firm" from California. Remember that one time when the 2002 countdown clock (still standing today) was sculpted by a guy from Colorado? Four sculptures to adorn Capitol- Tribune

Can you imagine the tour guide's script of the state capitol? After pointing out all of the materials used in the reconstruction and original building..."I would like to draw your attention to the sculptures on your right. They have been especially imported from California."
Priceless

Ya, this seems botched. Utah has many excellent (and, if we need others to tell us what's good, "renowned") sculptors. For examples, check out the sculptures on display in downtown St. George (http://www.shoppingstgeorge.com/art.htm) -- all done by Utahns, like Grant Speed, Silvia Davis, Ed Spears and Washington County residents L'Deane Trueblood, Matt Clark, Annette Everett, Ed Hlavka, and Jerry Anderson. As for any good-enough-for-the-Capitol questions, Ed currently has a piece displayed in the Smithsonian.
