Another On Senator Orrin Hatch

Just a small note on the previous Senator Hatch post. Things made more sense when we all believed he never came to Utah. Knowing he is here as much as other Senators just deepens the mystery of what Senator Orrin Hatch actually does with himself and his 30 years in the Senate.

Does Chuck-o-Rama on Sundays after church count for anything?

A couple of points...

1st. Cut the guy some slack. He's home just as often as everyone else and you still bag on him.

2nd. Do you really think Steve U or Pete A could deliver for Utah on high profile issues if they were elected next year? How long would it be before they were effective? The truth is Hatch's seniority is the best thing Utah has going for it in congress - am I wrong? Really, has Bennet, Matheson, Cannon, or Bishop REALLY delivered anything for Utah?

3rd. We don't live in a democracy. We live in a representative democracy. The Senate is supposed to be a step away from the people. Hatch/Bennet/McCain/Dole are supposed to be more deliberative nationally by definition of their office. Let the Reps in the House handle the everyday issues specific to Utah. They are the ones we should be more concerned about being in touch locally...

4th. I could sure go for some sarmale this time of year!

Hatch Lackey:
No! No! No!
1: It's not how often he is here, really. It's how much he has been THERE--DC. Being a career politician dulls anyone to the needs of their constituents, especially when they really only listen to insider lobbyists. Hatch has the same problem that Kennedy, Kerry, Byrd, Stevens, etc. have: they have been there too long, which leads to
2: Yes I do believe that Pete Ashdown will do a better job when he is elected, especially on high profile issues. The reason why? The reason you site: respresentative democracy. Pete is going to open the lines of communication so, for the first time, there will actually be a REPRESENTATIVE democracy--one that responds to the needs of the people. See his wiki. As far as seniority goes I have two things to say to that:
A: Seniority is only good when it works for the people represented. Hatch's seniority has done little to actually help Utahns, only getting his buddies judicial nominations, etc.
B: What has Hatch done with his seniority?
Not much on abortion, gun control, flag burning, etc. Only press conferences; no passages.
3: Your idea that Senators need to be a step away from the people was dismissed by something called the 17th Amendment.

I could go on and on, but I bet others will do that for me.

Brett, Brett, Brett...you are too naive! Enough with the Seniority=Lobbiest Lapdog. That's short sited, uninformed, and just lazy intellectually. If you could spend a day in the Senator's office - any Senator's office for that matter you would understand differently. You can't believe everything 20/20 spoon feeds you.

17th Amendment. Why have two bodies then? Let's just put them together, and make everyone equally less effective (only the leadership has any power in the House).

The fact of the matter is Pete A, would be ineffective until he was re-elected. What serious assignments would they give him first term? What did Bennett do his first term for instance? It takes time, and term-limit advocates don't understand that...

The dietary supplement industry is bigger than the ski industry in Utah. Hatch crafted and passed the DHSEA in 1994. He pretty much made it possible for Utah County to exist. Why would I vote against someone that has consistently delivered for one of the biggest industries in his home state?

We live in a representative democracy...are the people just so dumb that we don't know what our Senator is doing? We just blindly vote him in every six years? The truth is, the majority of mainstream Utah understands that Hatch is representative of Utah so that's why he'll be re-elected.
