Rep. Steve Urquhart

Paul Rolly reported on his blog today that Rep. Steve Urquhart is dropping out of the U.S. Senate race. has also reported this same story. Pete Ashdown has written a very nice tribute to Rep. Urquhart. I'm sad he's out. He added a lot of flavor to the race. I was really looking forward to seeing what would happen at the Republican Convention. Oh well.

You might as well get involved in a land war in Asia as soon as take on a multiple term Republican Senator from Utah.

I'll post as 'Hatch Lackey' since that's what you call me...but really, Urquhart is smart to get out while he still can. It was obviously going to be an uphill battle. He should stick in the House for a while, see if he can gravitate to the Speaker's position, then make it know he plans on taking Hatch's seat when he retires (probably in 6 years - although you can't be certain). But by then Kurt Bramble's ego might have inflated enough that the US House isn't good enough for him and he could make a run at Hatch's seat...

Pete Ashdown will stick it out and take one for the team. He'll then have to wait until the demographics in Utah switch enough (in 20 to 30 years) for a Democrat to be competitive in a statewide election.

Long live Litza's...

While it is sad that Urquhart dropped out, I don't think it is an end to hope of getting rid of Hatch. If you take a moment to look at Ashdown he seems moderate enough to challenge Hatch even amongst hard core conservatives. I consider myself a conservative Republican, and I have to say I'm liking Ashdown.

Maybe Ashdown doesn't have much of a chance because of Hatch's "experience", (barf, vomit, etc...)but I still have hope that enough people are sick of Hatch and the state will give a good serious look at the opposing party candidate.
