Most Utahn's Are Fine With "Not Senator Hatch"

That's according to a Dan Jones poll. It's 45% "keep Senator Hatch", 48% "give someone else a chance". Pete Ashdown identifies this as a great opportunity for his campaign. (as well as a great time to donate to his campaign) Many Conservatives have already decided to back Ashdown and surely more will come forward. After seeing this poll, I really understand why Senator Hatch's campaign was so determined to get Rep. Urquhart off the hunt.

Although Utah Republicans may admit they do not want Senator Hatch, I do not think there are enough Republicans out there who will put there money where their mouths are and support Pete Ashdown financially. That is too big of a risk politically to go up against the Hatch machine in case he wins yet another election. With out some major Republican financial backers, Pete Ashdown will not have a chance. He needs some big "R"s to come out soon, even before the Republican primary if that is possible.

Pete Ashdown can win if the Democratic Party realizes what an opportunity this is to get rid of old man Hatch. Ashdown should align himself with moderate Dems (like Matheson, Lieberman)and Democrat PAC's should spare no expense in helping with Ashdown's campaign!

I'm sure Ashdown isn't holding is breath hoping for big GOP money, however I'm sure Democrats across the country will be offering as much as they can.

Ahh. agreed. However, if all he has is democratic money and democratic support, he will not get the cross over vote he needs from the moderate republicans. Just because 48% of people think it is time for a change does not mean that they would still vote for a democrat over Hatch. They still may feel that Hatch and his seniority is worth the vote over a Democrat. Pete has to appeal to the Republican vote in this state. There is no way around it.
