Did You Know This Person?

Peter Von Sivers is the Capitol Hill Community Council Chairperson. He is also a history professor at the University of Utah. He is one of the plaintiffs in a lawsuit filed against the city because a new LDS Church downtown building has removed parking spaces from the Capitol Hill area and Peter Von Sivers is worried that the LDS Church project will translate into further parking problems for residents of Capitol Hill. The LDS Church may become a co- defendent in this lawsuit. Peter Von Sivers has endorsed Councilman Eric Jergensen.

Yet another endorsement from before Janneke was a candidate. Ethan, you are really stuck on this issue.

Peter Von Sivers is one of my professors. His political affiliation and opinions are more in line with Janneke than Eric. He may have endorsed Eric tacitly a few months ago but he also supports Janneke. Dr. Von Siver's primary focus is upon what is good for Capital Hill. He cares about parking, traffic and oversized buildings. He supports anyone that can favorably address those isuues.

Also, the endorsement consists of a quote from Dr. Von Sivers that essentially comments upon the working relationship between Eric and the Capital Hill community council. Beyond that Dr. Von Sivers has done nothing to support Eric.

Don't you think an endorsement is considered supporting someone? You say that Dr. Von Sivers opinions are more in line with Janneke, but how do you know? Is that from your observations in class? Are you sure that other people don't perceive it as being in line with Erics?

You seem to know a lot about Dr. Von Sivers. Are you assuming all this? It seems that the facts in the blog are just that, FACTS. If you were Dr. Von Sivers rep then maybe I could understand, but you are a student just making observations.

I am a student that has studied under Dr. Von Sivers for about 5 years both as an undergraduate and a graduate student. I have been involved with him academically and in association with vatrious things through the Middle East Center. I also met with him concerning Capital Hill community council concerns in association with Janneke's campaign. So, my comments are not those of a student interpeting comments made in class.

In my previous post I may have gotten side tracked. My point is than Ethan likes to repeatedly parade the list of Democrats supporting Eric without acknowledging that they all made their endorsements prior to having the option of endorseing Janneke. It was a lot easier for these Democrats to agree to support the incumbant city councilman when there was no alternative and it looked like he would run unoposed.

It is disengenuous to suggest that all these democrats made a concious decision to support Eric over Janneke when Eric collected all these endorsements before Janneke was a candidate.

I have come back to this website a couple of times and have been appaled at the attacks all the way around. To constantly go after janneke when in fact it is Cliff who is running the show. To say someone is a sell out for deciding to raise their child in the LDS church, and to question people who have spent more time in the democratic party than Jesus himself is proof once again that we don't need the republicans to tear us apart, we are doing it all on our own.

I long for the days we had a rath free party.

ALSO, has everyone forgotten this is a non partisan race?

I have not seen any of the democrats come out and endorse Janneke House now that she is running. I might be wrong, but if you can show me where Dr. Von Sivers endorsed Janneke publically then I might change my tune.

You say these democrats did not have the chance to endorse Janneke in the beginning and that is why they endorsed Eric. Now that Janneke is here why aren't we seeing them throw their support behind her?

For many people in the political sphere it is considered bad form or unethiucal to withdraw an endorsement after it has been given. So, while many dems who have agreed to endorse Eric are nowe regretting that decision, they feel it is wrong to drop an endorsement for Eric in exchange for Janneke. Therefore all of their support has been unofficial or behind the scenes.

Reply from Peter von Sivers:

Jason has taken a number of my classes and I appreciate him as an excellent and loyal student. He's right in saying that my wife and I are Democrats and he's also right that my primary focus is on what is good for Capitol Hill. That is why we are supporting Eric Jergensen and our support is unwavering. Eric is by far the best candidate and the best representative Capitol Hill could have on the City Council.

That statement is contrary to what Dr. Von Sivers was saying to me face to face earlier the same day when I told him what I had previously posted. Therefore, until I speak with him again, I am going to assume that the previous post is just someone impersonating Peter Von Sivers.

Especially since he usually signs at the end of a post with his UofU e-mail address and not at the top with a reply from Peter Von Sivers tag line. But hey, isn't this the place for "gutter politics"?

Peter Von Sivers is my freakin neighbor. He said that you had told him that we were bashiing him on this blog.

It just so happened that when we stopped by his house he was responding to this blog. He even mentioned that he was impressed by the blog and would return often.

He said he knows exactly who you are and that he has worked on projects with you in the past. You are not wrong in saying he is a democrat, but you were wrong in saying that his support was for Janneke.

I hope you are not too surprised when you find out that your teacher Dr. Von Sivers actually posted on this blog. Even though his name was at the beginning.

You are not the only one who knows him on a personal level Jason. Be careful about putting words into others mouths. How many other of the democrats that you claim support Janneke really do?

Your in school though so I am sure you are good at learnin your lesson.
