Clarification

As a commenter pointed out in a previous post, The State Democratic Party did not officially endorse Janneke House. There was, however, still a relationship there that was apparently not available to Councilman Jergensen as Cliff Lyon singled out the State Party for thanks in his end of campaign letter. UPDATE: As commenter ALB pointed out, Janneke House enjoyed a high profile advertisement on the State Party website. I suppose that's almost as strong as if they'd allowed her to post their endorsement on her website with the others.

Maybe they did not throw their support behind her officially, but there sure were a lot of donkeys everywhere.

Not only were there alot of donkeys, but they had her on the front page of their website for over a week, they let her borrow their donkey for honk and waves, and they organized phone banks up to the GOTV weekend.

Yes, and the GOP had their uncle sam costume out too.

Both parties helped their candidates in the races state-wide. A non-partisan race means that the format of the election is different with one all inclusive primary rather than two partisan primaries. The candidates in a non-partisan race do not renounce their political affiliations in order to run. The parties also still have a vested interest in the outcome of non-partisan races. Their reason for existing is to organize the poulation into electoral blocks for the purpose of elections. Our government system was conciously designed to have two parties and it has worked well so far. To then say on a municipal level that political affiliation doesn't matter is naive.

Finally, a lot of voters are apathetic in general. Especially in an off year election. Party affiliation is a short cut for the uninformed voter to guess which of the two candidates are more in line with their personal beliefs. I wish that voters would be more informed but ignorance does not deprive them of the right to vote. Besides, voter turnout is pathetic that I think it is a higher priority.

Jason,

You are admitting that you guys put the donkey all over Jannekes stuff so that you could lure Democrats to the polls based on a Jack-ASS instead of trying to inform them of what was going on.

I don't remember Eric coming out with a Republican trumpet. As a matter of fact it was Cliff Lyon and all of you on his campaign staff that kept bringing up the conservative mormon talk.

Logan,

Conservative Republican yes. Conservative Mormon no.

As I recall religion was brought up once, in a post on the blog by Cliff. At no time was it official campaign strategy to make religion an issue. Hell, the religion issue is a large part of why Eric beat Polly Hart four years ago. To make religion an issue in this race would be playing directly into Eric's hands.

Unfortunatly, that one comment about ward houses developed some momentum and probably cost us.

As for advertising Janneke's democrat-ness, I don't have a problem with that. A lot of people make their decisions based on party affiliation. In this district it works in favor of democrats. Elsewhere they are not as lucky. Look at the race in Provo. The mayor talked about his conservative family values while the oponent tried to minimalize any affiliation with the democratic party. Everyone knows the mayor is a Republican so he doesn't have to advertise, just remind voters.

Until a few weeks ago no one knew who Janneke was. If she can make her name synonymous with Democrat in district 3 I think it will only help her in the future.

man, a professed democrat runs for office and calls the party, asking for support and they do. WTF? The next thing you know these political parties might start holding conventions and stuff. GOOD GOD, they might even help MORE PEOPLE rumn for office.

Just because Cliff ran a shitty campaign, Ethan, is no reason to hold it against the party. They were just doing their job, as, when I called today and asked, they did for more than 20 candidates across the state (the humanity!). Those BASTARDS!

the comment I got on the phone today was: "when democrats run, we help as best we can. All a candidate has to do is ask and show that they're a democrat."

Diabolical!

The State democratic party was also split on helping Janneke. Jergensen has alot of friends in the Party and I am sure recieved some quieter help from them. There is a place for party politics. In this case, party politics got in the way of the issues. Because of Janneke's screaming "I am a democrat" so loud, I have no idea what she would have done about the issues. To me, government (especially local government) is about solving peoples problems. I have no idea how how janneke would do that. All I know is that she is a democrat and that she thinks Jergensen did a crappy job. Her being a democrat doesn't tell me anything about how she is going to get the traffic slowed down in front of my house, how to get my streets safer, and how to lessen my taxes.

i have to go with the fact that Eric is a registered republican and most likely didn't call the Demos for help.

I imagine that the Demos liked Janekke a lot, but were just as uncomfortable with the "cliff" part of her campaign.

I'm just guessing, but, Cliff and his gang can be a huge pain in the ass. Just ask the folks at D4U.

Jason,

I can understand the party wanting to support candidatees, but when Cliff Lyon made it the only topic of any conversation is when it got beyond ridiculous.
