I Know Why Cliff Lyon Was Replaced

At least it may be part of the reason. On the newly discovered Jen's Green Journal, Cliff Lyon commented on a post saying "My perception of the media was low before taking that stint [Comm. Dir. for Mayor Anderson]. It is lower now than I could have ever imagined." If you're a Mayor facing a public relatioins crisis and have NO relationship with the local press, would you be satisfied with such a spokesperson?

I am honored by your attention, and hope that SLCSPIN evolves into one which provides a true benefit to the community discussion. I will give you the same advice I gave Ken Bingham.

You need to begin to allow others to top post. Otherwise, it is nothing more than a platform for your views, which is fine, but will prevent it from ever gaining much legitimacy as a truly balanced place to debate.

In today’s partisan climate, I think it is important for all of us, to reach out and find the wide middle ground if we are to emerge from the muck of tribal-loyalty level bickering.

As per your epiphany surrounding my short tenure, you are largely correct. As I made clear to the media, and as is well known to Rocky and others, I am “over qualified and over opinionated” for that job. A quick check of my many letters to the editors reflects my political activism.

By the way, I had an absolute blast while I was there. The mayor’s office is a great place to work, and Rocky is GREAT to work for. The people that work for him are simply the finest you will meet anywhere. The impression one got from reading the papers during the Deeda thing was so utterly far from the truth, it verged on a disservice to the community. Ethically, Rocky is so beyond reproach, it frustrated the heck out of me. I constantly reminded him how effectively the republicans manipulate the media. He would have nothing of it. He is the victim of his principles.

I am in the very fortunate position of being able to invest the bulk of my time giving back to my community. Many in my position, have left the country. I choose to work to make my community a better place. See my promise here

To that end, I would like to help facilitate the strengthening of more progressive politics and institutions in my little world, and not from a party perspective, but rather in the mold of traditional public service. There is too much compromise on the left, and too much politicizing of morality and family values on the right in this state and the country.

I am concerned with the dominance of special interests in politics, and the disaffection of the voting public. I am saddened by the loss of community caused by urban sprawl, and the growing disparity between the rich and poor.

The great majority of Utahns, are thoroughly in the middle. Lets celebrate that!

Call me sometime. I’m easy to find.
