Mayor Anderson: We, By Which I Mean Me

In today's Tribune, Mayor Anderson revealed his true intent behind his executive order regarding partner benefits. While the City Council is busy working on a meaningful policy to provide benefits to families of city employees, Mayor Rocky Anderson declared: "We welcome the opportunity to get a court's determination." The executive order was never about insurance benefits. He wants a legal battle over Amendment 3. Then he should quit the Mayor's Office and go back to practicing law. Because there's a city that needs to be run and t'aint no one runnin' it right now.

The dude works like 70 hours a week. I think the city is being run - and quite well. Just because he is vocal about his opinions whenever Heather May gets him on the phone doesn't mean the trains aren't running on time.

Although i'd agree that a more extensive benefits eligibility policy being drafted by the City Council is probably the more fair proposal, you can't deny that their main motive for coming up with their own proposal is to dilute the City's insistence that gays and lesbians are real people. The Lege will fight anything that isn't discriminatory towards this state's gays and lesbians and the Council is probably just being pragmatic in their efforts.

You insist that the Mayor is taking a stand only on behalf of himself. Try telling that to the thousands of gays and lesbians in Salt Lake City who finally have someone in power that recognizes that not only do they exist, but they are people too. The fact that over 50,000 people attend SLC's Pride Day (second only to Days of '47) gives the Mayor an obligation to defend this substantial constituency. The fact that gays and lesbians in Utah have virtually no one in power fighting for them makes it all the more noble.

People who ridicule others for speaking out for the rights of the oppressed are a truly decadent bunch unbecoming of what this country is all about.

So?
The difference between mobocracy and democracy, is the willingness to protect the rights of the minorty.

So shawn and dexter, your gay right? No matter, not that there is anything wrong with being gay.

The problem is that voters already addressed this issue when amendment 3 was ratified to the state constitution. Mayor Anderson, and I'm sure dexter and shawn, are quite unhappy about this therefore you say screw what the voters have said (we the people). The Mayor arbitrarily enacts a law in direct opposition to the new amendment in order to spark a court battle, and hopefully you will find an activist judge that has no problem superceding a vote of the public for your point of view.

Funny thing about minorities, African-Americans, Hispanics, and other minorities are born as such. They truely have no choice in that matter, no do they desire any change. Homosexuals that have I have come in touch with have (after switching back and forth) make a conscious decision that this how they want to live (Usually they justfy it by cliaming they were born that way)Homosexuals (like dexter and shawn) on the other hand have made a choice to live the way they do.

I know occasionally there are studies that may suggest that there are genetic issues that may or may not cause homosexuals to be drawn to that lifestyle. Even if that theory gains general acceptance, using the same logic, there might be genetic issues leading pedophiles to be attracted to children. I doubt anyone would support them and call them a oppressed minority because there sexual fettish is a felony.

Gays and Lesbians are real people, and as real people they should have to accept the consequences of there life choices. Don't try and force the public (that has vocally opposed your life choices) to subsidize your decisions.

Dexter and Shawn, if your not gay, I apologize for the insinuation, I was speaking very sarcastically. I assumed correctly, then I'm just a good judge of character.
