But You're Mom is Proud of You

According to today's Tribune: Utah's college graduates don't leave Utah. Perhaps that explains why working at (the store formerly known as) ZCMI, I was the only person I knew without a college degree. Good news: Huge numbers of people in Utah have college degrees. Bad news: No one cares that you have a college degree.

Since Utah graduates more of its population with college degrees than any other state, it is important to get a degree in something that is considered useful in the workplace. Some of our degree programs are so separated from the real work world that they merely qualify their graduates to say, "Do you want fries with that?"

Nice comment. I am currently going to college full time and working full time, but I have no clue what I want to major.

Maybe I will just get a job with Real Salt Lake, then instead of fries it will be 'how many tickets?'

Its true that a college degree is the equivelant of a high school diploma say 20 years ago - everyone has one. I think now in order to differentiate yourself in the workplace/marketplace you need an advanced degree (Go Ethan!).

But really, everyone having a degree is a good thing...We could always debate the quality of education but I wonder if there has been any other country or civilization in the history of world with such an educated population...if only Jefferson were here to see it...Frumosul

Depends. I will be graduating this spring from the U of U with a Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering. At this point, I've already had 3 different companies promise me a job -- with a starting salary over $60,000.

Engineering degrees are very hot right now, especially the specialty engineering degrees(Mining, Metallurgical, Electrical, etc)

I guess that its good than that I don't have a college degree. Its not going to benefit me and I have a good job without it.

Actually, I have been seriously thinking about going back to school for my accounting degree. Hopefully, the popularity of being an acocuntant will die down. I read a poll the other day that stated that accounting is the most sought out profession right now. Great. I have been cookin' the books for 6 years now and when I finally decided to get a degree is when its the "cool" field to go into. fantastic.

If there are so many college grads in this state, why are so many people here so stupid?

Also, I disagree with reach upward. University/college courses are meant to develop the mind.

If one wants job training, go to a Vo/Tech.

Yes, I know I'm elitist.
