The Evangelicalization of Senator Chris Buttars

It's true Utah politics is dominated by social conservatives. It is, however, a political ideology that seems to be fairly specific to our little corner of the world. In the intelligent design fight, Senator Buttars and the Utah Eagle Forum have taken their cue from the evangelical conservative movement. This may frighten away some conservative Mormon politicians because almost without knowing how or why, Mormons have found their way onto the Evangelical "Going to Hell" list. So, why should Mormon conservatives go to bed with a political movement that won't respect them in the morning?

This could be like applying the wrong cure for a malady. Like Evangelicals, conservative Mormons are concerned about the secularist witch hunt to purge all things religious from public education, and indeed, from public life in general. However, Mormons that feel that evolutionism twists the truth will probably feel the same about the "Devine Design" doctrine being promoted by Buttars, once they understand it.

Buttars is promoting Devine Design rather than Intelligent Design. Devine Design theory acknowledges a living Creator with ongoing influence. It fits well with Protestant doctrine, but the details don't fit so well with LDS doctrine. Intelligent Design theory is only a step beyond humanism. While it acknowledges an intelligent force in creation, it does not suppose that it still exists or has influence today.

Not all Mormons drink in with the Eagle Forum folks. I hope legislators take a long careful look at this before starting something that could end up being a doctrinal holy war.

Buttars makes my skin crawl.

And he's going to get press for this.

Just what mormons need: more misinformation in the national press.
