The Right to Free Parking

The Downtown Alliance has developed a new plan for downtown parking tokens according to the Deseret News. They say they want to "alleviate fears that parking downtown is a hassle". Parking downtown is actually not a hassle at all, it's very, very easy. You just pay, then park. Cake. There is parking everywhere. Suburban Salt Lake complains downtown parking is "a hassle" but consider: Wal- Mart is free, Target is free, Costco is free, and the suburban malls are free, so the suburbs have internalized a "right to park for free". That's the real complaint.

All those people who complain about parking and traffic really need to visit a city like Boston or LA or Chicago. This place is a paradise! There is no real traffic, no parking hassles. Life for me here is so much more stress-free since I moved back home to SLC.

Westerners have strong beliefs about cars: their right to drive fast, their right to drive without tolls, their right to drive offroad/on public lands, the right to own as big a car with as bad of milage as possible.

No where else have I seen such strong opions on those matters.
