Dog Advocates Should Not Read This

Today's Deseret News reports a Provo police officer shot and killed two pit bulls. Good for him. Remember a couple of years ago when that little girl had her face torn off by someone's rottweiler in Liberty Park? If only that were an isolated case. According to the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, 18 of the 27 dog- bite related fatalities in the U.S. in 1996- 1997 were thanks to rottweilers and pitt bulls. The remaining 9 fatalities were spread out over all the other breeds and mixes. I wonder what the figures for injuries are There is no right to own pit bulls and rottweilers.

::sigh:: I grew up with a Rottweiler named Brie. She was the best dog any family could ask for. She didn't seem to have a mean bone in her body and was great with us small kids. My father did a bit of breeding of Rottweilers as they were just growing in popularity. Because of how much I loved this dog, I have always thought that someday I would have a Rott. My father tells me it is a bad idea. The breed has been bred to be vicious over the past 20 years and there's not much chance of finding another Brie. That is sad, but perhaps just a fact of life. I've concluded that when my wife and I do finally get a dog, it probably won't be a Rott.

Bradley, your comment makes a lot of sense because the same data I used in the post shows that between 1979 and 1989, Rottweilers caused 6 fatalities. Between 1990 and 1998, they were responsible for 39 deaths. That's a pretty big jump. That's too bad, because from your experiences, it sounds like people have ruined a pretty neat dog.

The only ones who should be shot dead are the owners of the pit bulls or rottwiellers who obviously raised them horribly and abused them and exploited them. These beautiful creatures are DOGS and they have every characteristic that every dog has -- loyalty, devotion, lovingness, kindness, forgiveness, etc. Rottwiellers are one of the best breeds. It is not a dog's fault that the wrong people are breeding them and buying them for the wrong reasons!!!!
Use some intelligence here. Use some common sense.
Again - let's shoot the idiots that mistreat dogs and make them mean!!! Human beings are the ones who domesticated what we know as dogs now and it is human beings that must take all responsibility.
Vicious people raise vicious dogs and vicious people write idiotic things like you've written here!!!
